This
year troop 320, sponsored by the Shapleigh Baptist Church, has passed
a Scouting milestone, 30 years of continuous service and come complete
circle with the church taking over sponsorship in 2004. The troop's
program has influenced over 250 boys, supported by 3 Scoutmasters,
countless Scouting Volunteers, Assistant Scoutmasters, Troop Committee
members, and institutional Representatives.
Boy Scouts have been in the Shapleigh-Acton area since 1937 with
the founding of Camp Nutter Boy Scout Camp on the shore of Loon
Pond. The Troop's early history included a 3 year run from 1966
to 1968, sponsored by the Shapleigh First Baptist church with Albert
Barry listed as Scoutmaster, and again from 1973 to 1974 with Robert
Phinney as Scoutmaster. Today's Troop 320 was chartered in August,
1977 by the Shapleigh Fire Department with Bob returning as Scoutmaster
for almost 3 years. Bill Norwald finished out the 3rd year and stayed
on as Scoutmaster until August 1981. It's current Scoutmaster, David
Wade, started as Assistant Scoutmaster May of 1981. In August 1981
he became Scoutmaster temporarily until the
Committee could find a permanent Scoutmaster. Needless to say Mr.
Wade is still the Scoutmaster to this day. The Troop at one time
covered three towns, Acton, Newfield and Shapleigh however our membership
is open and we currently have boys from Springvale, Sanford, and
Kittery. For the accomplishments of the troop please check out our
Legend on the Activities Page.
